CHANGE BY DESIGN - NEW DIALOGUES FOR RETAIL ENVIRONMENTS

The retail industry is vital for the well being of many communities both urban and regional. It is the largest employer in Australia. It is possibly also the sector supporting more SME’s than any other. In many cases larger retail sector players, for example shopping centres and retail store chains, are implementing new environmentally (ESD) and socially conscious designs (SCD) in answer to global design awareness, societal pressures and consumer recognition of growing concern.

When Westfield redeveloped Doncaster Shoppingtown it did so mindful of big and small picture ESD concerns. GPT across its retail portfolio is well advanced in areas of retail engagement and education and is driving a myriad of tenant specific ESD initiatives, and ISPT’s brilliant groundbreaking adventure with Greenhouse Perth illustrates just how amazing the results can be if approached from outside the square and parameters which keep us designing ‘same old same old’ centres. And how well considered and crafted is Ryan Russell’s plywood and tiled store design developed for Aesop?

This seminar examines what is being done, what has been and is being considered, that will help shape the retail environment of the future? What are the forecasts, considerations and human impact of retail centres on communities and how can the various market players create an industry standard, and influence retailers at the coal face, many of whom are reticent to think sustainably for whatever reason?

Key speakers:
Deborah Pool, National Design Coordinator | Regional Manager Queensland & Victoria | Westfield National Shop Openings/Leasing
Steven Borin, Retail Development Manager, GPT
Renee Nutbean, Property Investment Manager, ISPT
Ryan Russell, architect, Russell & George

ryan russellRyan Russell AIA MDIA
M Arch, B Des St

Ryan’s experience as a designer has crossed the fields of architecture and interior design, industrial design, theatre and exhibition design.

In 2007, RYAN RUSSELL won both the National Interior Design Award for Emerging Practice and the national Idea Award for Retail, for Left, a cutting –edge fashion store situated on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, one of Melbourne’s emerging inner city streets for art and fashion. As a retail space, Left demonstrated Ryan’s skilful manipulation of space, light and material surfaces to create stores which communicate the essence of the philosophy and products behind a brand, while engaging the customer with a unique shopping experience.

In the last two years, Ryan’s commissions have ranged from the design of Aesop stores throughout Australia and Asia, new offices complete with custom-designed furniture for Harvey Publicity, and the corporate pavilion for Qantas at the 2009 Australian Grand Prix, to exhibition and graphic design for the fashion exhibition retrospective at the National Trust’s Como House, on Melbourne couturier Robert Fritzlaff - the exhibition highlight of the 2009 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Before starting his practice in 2006, Ryan was a Design Associate with Cox Architects and Planners responsible for the design, delivery and team management of projects from $100k to $1.5billion in project areas such as, sport and tourism, single residential, multi-residential, hospitality, retail, education and commercial, such as the Al Ain University in the UAE, 567 Collins Street, Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur Media Scape.

Ryan’s key strength’s lie in the rapid assessment and development of innovative design solutions, and a sound understanding of the essential interface between design and commercial viability. He is a registered architect and Member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.

Practice Profile
Russell & George was created through the merger of the multi award winning businesses of Ryan Russell and Byron George Architects.

The goal of the practice is to create design solutions that extend thresholds and blur the line between different fields of design practice. This creates a dialogue between people and the places they inhabit and engage with. In this way interiors become urban design schemes, industrial design works become art pieces, architecture as industrial design pieces.
